Social Media Metrics and Analytics Thoughts
While studying Integrated Public Relations and Advertising, I have come to learn how important social media is to the success of a company today. Being able to track the amount of likes a post gets or even the amount of online traffic a website or video gets can be very crucial to improving how a brand connects with its consumers. I feel like this chapter specifically really delves into this aspect and can be very helpful for those who are studying anything business related. Online targeted advertisements help target consumers and highlight products they will likely want to buy. This is one of the biggest aspects of a good marketing plan. This as well as being able to use different ways of measuring how effective the advertisements and posts are helping companies communicate more effectively. Features such as liking, number of followers, comments, and retweets helps a company see how their posts or uploads are being perceived. This and the ability to save data on users help businesses aim their advertisements towards those who would typically take interest. These methods can still feel like an invasion of privacy to some users. Even though I appreciate the effect this can have on businesses, I can see why users might find this method of advertising alarming. Everything we do on the internet is used and saved for businesses to make a profit. However, that does not mean that these are the only people who have access to this information. The fact is there are hackers out there that can easily access the same information that companies are using to target advertisements. In general, this might feel like an invasion of privacy to many. Especially if the data is not being used properly. Personally, I feel like there is no way of avoiding any of this on the internet. I do find myself often enjoying the products and businesses these advertisements show me. I also enjoy learning about these topics in my different business and advertising classes. I think today knowing about this aspect of advertising and the internet is important.
Hey Hannah, I really enjoyed your defense on how companies utilize our data. Its very easy to get caught up on the idea that companies are selling our data without our consent, however I found your analysis different. I like dhow you brought up the fact that companies are also at the mercy of social media, and how they try to market themselves by meeting certain metrics and posts online.
ReplyDeleteHi, Hannah! I think it's so cool that companies take full advantage of the different media platforms and what they can do on them in order to market or do whatever they have to do that they think will grow their brand. Hackers are what make the internet a scary place. Sometimes you think things are private, or you may sign off on things because they promise you privacy, but that means nothing to hackers. Companies have to be the most careful since a bigger name is always going to have a bigger target on their back in terms of who hackers go for.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah, I also think that it would be alarming for users if their online information can be used not only by businesses for profit but also by bad people that can exploit those information for their personal gains. It might be hard to avoid those on the Internet but developers who created those platforms should have the responsibility to address these concerns and provide more securities for the users. I can't deny the fact that the personalized online feeds does provide users with benefits in some ways but the problems are more concerned than its benefits in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah, I think tracking the data and clicks on online posts does prove to be an extremely useful tool. Its understandable that some might see this as a invasion of privacy, but for business settings this data is only used for advertising purposes. On that note, many businesses are more invasive with the data they track. This data must be kept safe however because if it gets into the wrong hands that is when it can become a real problem.
ReplyDeleteHi Hannah, great post I really enjoyed reading what you had to say. I think it is a strong marketing strategy for businesses to use all different types of social media platforms to gain following and promote what they have to offer. I understand why many people see pulling your data is not safe and rather scary. I personally think it can be a good thing as your social media platforms are filled with advertisements targeted to you.
ReplyDeleteHey Hannah,
ReplyDeleteIt's really interesting, that businesses make the most of the opportunities they have on the various media platforms to sell or carry out other tasks that they believe will help their brands become more well-known. The internet is a frightening place because of hackers. Sometimes you may believe that something is private, or you may agree to something because it makes you feel secure, but hackers will act without regard.
Hi Hannah, it was awesome to see your perspective as a Public Relations and Advertising major! Everything that you have learned sounds pretty cool and amazing. I agree with you liking what the products advertised by businesses because of the data gathered on your social media. I also agree that there is nothing we can do about it besides being careful!
